Route overview

We start on the steps or plaza right after exit, then move to the Municipal Building archway at Centre and Chambers Street, followed by the courthouse columns and crosswalks near City Hall Park. Everything is within a few minutes on foot so we can capture variety without rushing.

Supreme Court steps and columns

  • Classic New York stone and scale. Great for wide frames and elegant portraits.
  • Be mindful of people using the steps. We wait for brief gaps and work quickly.
  • Light can be bright at midday. We angle for even light and clean backgrounds.

Municipal Building archway

  • Even light and a dramatic frame that works in most weather.
  • Close to the exit, easy to reach. Good for family portraits and couple portraits.
  • Works well when wind is strong on open steps.

City Hall Park crosswalks and street scenes

  • Energetic frames with motion. We time crossings for clean shots and safety.
  • Street scenes nearby add texture without long walks.
  • No permits are required for casual portraits in public areas.

Exit moments on the plaza

  • Certificate in hand, congratulations, and quick group photos.
  • Short, natural prompts to keep things relaxed. Nothing overly posed.

Timing and light

  • Midday is brighter. We use columns and archways to soften light.
  • Late afternoon often gives more even light on steps and nearby streets.
  • Plan 45 minutes for this session, right after certificate pickup.

Rain backup nearby

For heavier rain or strong wind, we switch to covered corridors and the archway. See the dedicated list here: Rain and Winter Backups Near City Hall.

Considering the Brooklyn Bridge

The Bridge is an optional add on. Reaching the midpoint takes time and can be windy, so it is best booked as a Landmark session. Full details here: Brooklyn Bridge Add On vs 45 Minute Session.
